Effective Treatment for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder(OCD)

OCD or Obsessive-compulsive disorder is a condition that causes a person to do a particular action over and over again. This desire or thought or feeling of wanting to do a particular thing repeatedly is called obsession and the act of doing it repeatedly is called compulsion. A person with OCD may have both the urges or just one of them.

It is important to understand the difference between OCD and normal habits. To give an insight, people who have OCD try to live their life in a certain way, where they categorize normal day to day things into good or bad. Like having an obsession with keeping the volume at an even number, green suits walls and not curtains, or having the compulsion to wash your hands five times after touching something that is considered dirty.

Again, every individual does have habits that they like to repeat. This habit relates to OCD when it:

1.   Consumes at least one hour of your daily life

2.  You cannot stop yourself from doing it

3.  Is not something you enjoy doing

4.  Is interfering with your social, work and other parts of your life.

5.  These are habits that are peculiar in nature, as in they do not make sense.

 Treatment:

Now that we have understood what OCD means and how it can be recognised in a person, let us move on with the treatments. The first and foremost point is, it will not go away on its own. If you do feel that you have OCD, visit a specialist. There are several OCD Doctors in Delhi, Like Serenity Clinic. They will find an answer to your doubts and will help you find an effective treatment plan. To give an idea about how treatment for OCD works, few points have been jotted below:

 1.  Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT):

This therapy work to obstruct the OCD cycle, obsession, anxiety, compulsion and relief. You will get help in deviating from these thoughts to many productive ones. In other words, it doesnt just deal with removing OCD but also tells you what you can replace it with.

 2. Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP):

ERP is a form of CBT where a person with OCD is exposed to their anxiety triggers, a little at a time, and is taught how to react to those situations in a healthy or desired way. Basically, you are changing your repetitive way of deals things with actions that are diverse.  This process of Exposure and Response Prevention can be done with one’s medical professional, or at group therapy or even with friends and family.

 3.  Medication:

People with OCD are often prescribed anti-depressants. It does not mean that that individual has depression, but these medications just help in curing or dealing with OCD. Taking note of your age, gender and symptoms, your medical professional may prescribe you tablets such as, clomipramine (Anafranil), fluoxetine (Prozac), fluvoxamine (Luvox), paroxetine (Paxil), sertraline (Zoloft), or other antidepressants which may seem effective.

Make sure that you state all the side effects to your doctor. You may have nausea or dryness in your mouth or feelings of suicide, and these are very serious reactions that your doctor must be made aware of. If you do not like the side effects, or if you feel you have recovered enough, do not stop taking your medications abruptly, without the guidance of your doctor, as these should be slowly tapered off. Your doctor will guide you in every step as to what the schedule should be and how you can stop taking them.

OCD is a much-recognised issue today, and almost all the OCDtreatments in Delhi or any other place as such will try to strategise what is best for you. All will try to help you without relying on medications, and you must do your share of keeping yourself physically healthy by eating healthy and exercising regularly.
